Special Needs Education at Harriston School
The Special Needs Class was established to meet the growing need in Harrismith for inclusive, supportive education for differently abled children. What began as a shared dream among parents, caregivers, and educators is now a reality, thanks to the dedication of families and professionals across South Africa. The class provides a safe, nurturing environment where learners build confidence, independence, and reach their full potential.

School Day
Core focus areas are Numeracy and Literacy, supported by activities such as baking, cooking, structured/free play, and weekly Music, Art, IT, and Sport lessons. Learners also benefit from group sessions led by an Occupational Therapist and Speech Therapist. Regular outings—such as visits to farms, conservancies, and libraries—extend learning beyond the classroom.

Curriculum
Teaching is personalised through Individual Education Plans (IEPs), tailored to each learner’s strengths and challenges. Parents are involved in reviewing and refining these plans to ensure shared goals and progress. Themes run fortnightly, covering general knowledge subjects like Natural Sciences and Geography in an informal, engaging way.

Application Process
Prospective learners and families meet the team for an initial assessment, followed by a two-week trial to ensure the class is the right fit. Successful trials lead to official registration.
